SPILT ALL OVER!- A SHORT STORY

“Where is it?” Asked the inspector as he got out of his vehicle. I led him directly to it and said, “I don't know who did it, sir, but look at it. It's right there, all out in the open, for everyone to see.” The inspector’s eyes widened as he saw it. Such a heinous display of death. Red everywhere. The inspector kept looking at it, because as disturbing as the visuals were, he couldn't take his eyes off it. He asked me, “Who, according to you, did it?” And I told him everything. “A man entered our cafe early in the morning when no one was around, no staff, no customers, no one else, just me. He sat right there on that table.” I said as I pointed straight at a table right next to where it had happened, and continued, “I told him that we weren't ready to serve anything at the moment, but he just kept looking at me, smiling. It made me uncomfortable. He sat there for hours, ordering food and coffee multiple times, and as the staff arrived and customers started to pour in, I lost track of him. After sometime I noticed that he was gone from where he sat, and right next to it, right next to it was……” my voice cracked as I continued the terrible tale, “Right next to the table I saw it, all over the floor, the insides were everywhere, and as I saw it I immediately called you. Look at it, it's already starting to rot.” I said with a look of disgust on my face. “How could anyone do something like this? Something so brutal? That too in broad daylight in public?” I said.

The inspector looked at me and asked, “How is it possible that no one saw or heard anything?” I immediately turned all of my attention to him and said, “What are you suggesting? Do you think I would let something like this happen at my café? Do you know how much it affects my business?” The inspector replied, “No, of course not, I am not accusing you of anything, I am just trying to assess the situation. You have CCTV cameras, right? I want to look at the footage.” As I turned to ask one of my staff members to get the footage ready for us to view, the inspector turned to his colleague and asked him, “Make sure that no one leaves the scene until I have questioned everyone.” His colleague responded instantly, “But most of them have already left even before we arrived.” The inspector responded, “Just speak to everyone and then bring the one who has the most information to me, till then I will have a look at the CCTV footage.” As I stood and observed this conversation, all that was on my mind was how someone could do such a thing. The inspector asked me to give his colleague a description of the man, which I did in proper detail. How could I forget what he looked like? I will never be able to forget that.

The inspector asked me to show him the footage, and I took him to the monitor right behind the cafe counter, where all the camera feed was displayed. We both watched in horror as we played back the footage of the crime. It was one of the most gruesome things I had ever seen. Just as we were watching the footage, the other inspector entered the cafe again and had someone with him. It was the man who committed the crime. The other inspector said, “Found him roaming around nearby. He thought we wouldn't notice.” As soon as I saw him, I knew it was him. I charged at the man, and the other inspector moved him out of the way. I was told to calm down as my staff brought me a glass of water, and they cuffed the man. He kept on saying he didn't do anything wrong and that it was just a sandwich which he dropped by mistake, and that it was something that he had paid for. How does paying for it justify what he did? How could he even think that? Who drops a sandwich and just leaves it lying there to rot? And why didn't he just buy another one then if it was a mistake? I knew he was lying, and so did the inspectors. He didn't drop it by mistake, HE DID IT ON PURPOSE.
